Talk Abstract: Effective strategies to fight Dengue virus (DENV) are still needed and depend on a deeper knowledge on the viral life cycle. Our work identified the DENV capsid protein (DENV C) as a supercharged protein with the ability to translocate across membranes and a potential role in viral entry. In addition, two DENV C domains were identified as cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), suggesting that this protein is a source of novel CPPs. One of these peptides, PepR, was shown to be multifunctional displaying antimicrobial properties including antibacterial, antibiofilm and antiviral activity. Based on these results and using bioinformatic tools we were able to show that structural viral proteins are an underexplored source for bioactive peptides with cell-penetrating and antibacterial properties.
Speaker's bio: Ana Salomé Veiga graduated in Biochemistry in 2003, and obtained a PhD degree in Molecular Biophysics in 2008 (University of Lisbon, Portugal). In 2009, Dr Veiga was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship and started her postdoctoral research at the University of Delaware (USA), moving later to the National Cancer Institute (NCI, NIH, USA). Dr Veiga returned to the University of Lisbon and received a FCT Investigator Fellowship in 2013 to work at the Faculty of Medicine where she was recently appointed as a lecturer. Dr Veiga research is focused on the design and study of membrane-active peptides, such as antimicrobial and anticancer, and their mode of action at the molecular level. She has been also interested to unravel the membranes\\\' role on the mechanism of action of antiviral peptides.
