Talk Abstract: In plants, the phloem serves as a vascular transport pathway for nutrients and mobile signals. Apart from nutrients and hormones, proteins and RNAs are transported via the phloem and contribute to the intercellular communication coordinating plant growth and development. Different classes of endogenous RNAs are mobile in the phloem, including small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and protein-encoding messenger RNAs (mRNAs). RNA transport in the phloem is thought to be mediated by ribonucleoprotein complexes formed between phloem RNA-binding proteins and the mobile RNA molecules. Dr Kragler will talk about their recent analysis of the phloem-mobile transcriptome of plants, and the identification of a tRNA-like sequence (TLS) mobility motif that is sufficient and necessary for intercellular, long-distance mRNA transport in plants.
Speaker's bio: Fritz completed his PhD at the University of Vienna in 1995. He was then a post-doctoral or senior research fellow in the laboratories of Bill Lucas, UC Davis, USA (1995-1997; 2001-2004) and Elisabeth Waigmann, University of Vienna, Austria (1997-2000). From 2003-2011, Fritz took up a Faculty position in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Vienna, and since 2011, has been a permanent Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Golm, Germany. His research interests are the transport and function of mobile transcripts and transcription factors in plants, and the biogenesis and intracellular distribution of peroxisomes.
